Let’s talk about your goal to drink less.
You’ve got plenty of good reasons why it matters to you, and you’re determined to follow through.
But then temptation strikes, and you give in.
You promise you’ll be more responsible next time, but once you start drinking, your plan goes out the window.
Maybe you start setting rules or counting drinks, but your success rate is spotty.
Why is it so hard to do what’s good for you?
For starters, you are not the problem.
The problem is society.
You’ve been led to believe that normal drinking should just come “naturally” without needing any instruction.
“Be responsible, learn your lesson, and don’t be so stupid next time.”
These messages are the real problem.
Society didn’t set you up to develop healthy habits with alcohol.
We’re inundated with mixed messages and given very little guidance on managing temptation.
Take, for example, the advice of counting drinks.
In theory, this makes a lot of sense.
Plan fewer drinks and wake up happier.
So why is it so hard to stick to your number?
Because you’re a complex individual, not a machine!
Sure, counting drinks can work for short periods of time—and it can be a great awareness-raising tool—but it rarely works forever.
Think of the normal drinkers in your life.
Are they religiously planning, counting, and logging every drink?
Nope.
If you want to drink less, you need to look at the big picture.
Let’s start with why you crave a drink.
Yes, you like the taste and how the drink makes you feel, but there’s more to this story.
Over time, your brain learned to associate alcohol with certain people, places, activities, experiences, thoughts, and emotions.
All of this can make saying no to a drink more complicated.
Yet, society paints a very different picture.
It insists that struggling to say no to temptation is a sign you have a “problem.”
I call bullshit.
I believe you’re running headfirst into an inner conflict that has a lot less to do with alcohol than you might think, and requires more sophisticated skills than just counting drinks.
Drinking less isn’t about magically “finding” more self-control.
It’s about having the right education and necessary self-awareness that make self-control possible.
No one taught this to your parents, so they couldn’t teach you.
These aren’t skills that you learned in school.
And you aren’t going to find this information from a Google search.
That’s why I wrote

Hi, I’m Rachel Hart
For years, I searched for a logical approach to explain my drinking that didn’t insist on lifelong abstinence or rely on scare tactics, shame, or the need for a higher power.
Less than a decade after becoming a coach, I’ve helped thousands of people achieve their goals of drinking less, experimenting with alcohol-free periods, or releasing alcohol from their life.
I’m on a mission to help people become more curious, open, and aware of their drinking habits so they can examine their relationship with alcohol without shame or judgment. I believe this is the foundation for lasting change.
My approach is radically different from the typical 12-step or disease-model framework developed almost a century ago.
I’m a master certified life coach, creator of The Drink Archetypes,™ author of the book, Why Can’t I Drink Like Everyone Else?, and host of the top-rated podcast, Take a Break from Drinking.
My ideas have been featured in The New York Times, The Mel Robbins Podcast, Women’s Health, and Psychology Today.
